Women In Tech Week 2017
19-23 September 2017 was women in tech week,a Women-in-Tech-Africa initiative .Women in Tech Week is a global event organized annually and simultaneously in all Chapter countries. This week brings together women entrepreneurs and women in the technological space from all over the world. As Techempowerment ,we were independent organizers for events held during this week.
On this day, we invited high schools around Bulawayo to provide students who would be interested in attending the classes ,on offer, namely:
- Tech for creatives
- Engineering in the modern world
- Business Informatics
Schools in attendance were Mandwandwe High School,Girls College,Speciss College and Mzilikazi High School. The students had a feedback session where they shared what they had learnt. At the end of the event, certificates were awarded and the students networked. It was a lively environment as the students were so excited and they were communicating well with their tutors.
A panel discussion was held with the aim to address the topic ' Has affirmative action had the desired effects for women in tech?'. There were three speakers(Marlene Mhangami,Kernan Mzelikahle,Sinqobile Ndlovu) and one moderator(Terrence Mugova). This discussion was so interesting as it had a very diverse panel who brought forward different perspectives. The event had over 80 attendees varying from students to the working class .This was very impressive as people managed to network and share ideas .It also showed us how much people are willing to learn about tech and to help women as well.
As the event organizers ,we learnt a lot and we are hoping to have bigger and more interesting projects for Zimbabweans and push forward the technology growth agenda for Africa.Special mention goes to our sponsors and partners for helping to make this event a success.
